Last chances to see Freer ceramics in the Peacock Room (for a while)

The Peacock Room at the National Asian Art Museum was created by artist James McNeill Whistler, disassembled from its original London home, and eventually moved to its current purpose-built home in the museum by collector Charles Freer.

The Peacock room has been filled with mainly Asian pottery collected by Freer, spanning different cultures and epochs, but all in blue and green hues.

However, the room was originally filled with blue and white ceramics, and the museum is switching out the current items for blue and white ceramics in the coming weeks, and the current items in display will go into storage. That means that this Thursday's opening of the windows at the Peacock Room will likely be your last time (for at least a while) to see the pieces shine in natural light.

Learn more about the Freer ceramics.

Things I'm Talking About

πŸͺ§ Like I said last week, I am not the best source for news about the DC occupation. If you're looking for up to date ways to get involved, Organize DC is probably the best source of events.

πŸ₯« If you've ever bought Poppi brand sodas, you may be entitled to compensation. As part of a settlement around the truthfulness of their "gut healthy" marketing claims, you can get 75 cents per can.

πŸš† Metro is taking votes for designs on the new 8000-series cars. Personally, I'm not excited about any of them, but you do get a voice!

πŸ“Ί Hit TV show The Traitors is casting normal people for their 2026 season. If you always thought that you would win the show, now's your chance as they revamp the celeb-only model.

🏊 Public pools have started to close across DC, with the last ones closing on September 1.

Valerie

Give your opinion, and check back next week for the results.

Last week, I asked: Do you plan on protesting the federal actions in DC? You responded:

  • Yes, the next one I can (54.3%)
  • No, I'm scared to (26.1%)
  • No, I don't have anything to protest (13%)
  • I already have (6.5%)

🐢 Bingo, Beats & Best-Dressed Dogs

Get ready to unleash the fun Sunday, September 7 in Petworth! Enjoy an afternoon packed with live music, lawn games, local shopping, and the show-stealing Petworth Dog Showβ€”so bring your leashed pups, picnic blankets, and competitive spirit.

From Bingo with local businesses (win a $250 gift card!) to balloon artists, DJs, and food specials, there’s something for the whole fam. πŸŽ‰.

Show off & have your pup strut their stuff in categories like Best Trick or Best Dressed. πŸŽ‰

Whether you're in for the fun, the eats, or the dogs in costumes, this is one block party you don’t want to miss.

β€‹πŸ‘‰ Learn more & register your dog by August 25!

🍲 DC Summer Restaurant Week lasts until Sunday with lunch and dinner specials, and there are 10 Michelin-starred restaurants participating.

πŸ₯’ Local favorite Peter Chang opened his latest restaurant, Peter Chang Kitchen, in College Park last week.

🍞 A Baked Joint, the sister bakery to Baked & Wired located in Mt Vernon Square, is merging with bar la Betty starting September 10. Mornings will be an updated A Baked Joint (renamed la Betty AM), and the evenings will be la Betty PM, the existing listening room & natural wine bar experience.

πŸ¦β€β¬› La Boheme's seasonal update happens tomorrow, with a new menu inspired by Edgar Allen Poe.

β˜• A new cafe, Blossom Daily, opened in Georgetown and is staffed by adults with disabilities. It also partners with organizations that provide employment and creative opportunities to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Tried & True features your favorite go-to restaurants that have been around for a while and serve you consistently good food.

This Week's Feature: Buck's Fishing and Camping

"Buck's Fishing and Camping!!! Great for a date. Great for a night enjoying drinks and great food with friends. And I’ve even seen a lot of families come through with kids. The fried oysters are friggin AMAZING. And if they have halibut in the menu that day- hell to the yes. Almost all the appetizers are a hit. I love to go and sit at the bar and just relax!" Jessica

While the city has its snow plow tracker, it's a little unclear what it means because a street that is marked as having been serviced 4-8 hours ago on the plow tracker looks like this 2 hours ago. A rail cracked on the metro, and WMATA posted a cool video of setting it on fire to clear the snow. A vigil...
